Celebrate 125 years of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village!
Join in celebrations this summer to commemorate the 125th anniversary (1891-2016) of Ukrainian immigration to Canada! The first Ukrainian settlement in Canada was established northeast of Edmonton during the years 1892-1894, north of present-day Lamont. Between 1892 and 1930, Ukrainian immigrants would establish other bloc settlements (or colonies) in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. None was larger, however, than the Ukrainian bloc settlement in east central Alberta. Today, Edmonton has the largest population among all Canadian cities and Alberta has the largest population among all provinces.
Witness this vibrant history come alive at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, an open-air living history museum where costumed role-players recreate the life of east central Alberta’s early Ukrainian pioneers. Step back in time to 1892-1930 and hear real stories of triumphs and hardships in Canada’s oldest settlement of Ukrainian pioneers. Explore more than 35 historic structures by foot or hop on a free horse-drawn wagon. Make your experience complete with mouth-watering Ukrainian food.
This summer’s feature exhibit – Where We Came From –celebrates the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada by highlighting stories and experiences of Ukrainian-Canadian families, as understood and presented by the youngest generation of Albertans. See the best artwork submitted Alberta students as they share their family history in a piece of artwork.
